Ferritic Steel

Ferritic stainless steel features a body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure with 10.5-30% chromium and low carbon (<0.1-0.2%), minimal nickel, and often stabilizers like titanium or niobium, making it magnetic, cost-effective, and resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking compared to austenitic grades. It offers good oxidation resistance up to 800-870°C, excellent thermal conductivity (16-25 W/m·K), low thermal expansion, and moderate corrosion protection in mild environments via a passive chromium oxide layer, though weldability requires care to avoid sensitization

SS 409

Features:
  • Durable ferritic stainless steel with excellent heat and oxidation resistance
  • Ideal for automotive exhausts and high-temperature industrial applications
  • Cost-effective with good corrosion resistance and easy weldability

Applications:
Primarily automotive exhaust parts, catalytic converters, mufflers, industrial furnace components, heat exchangers, and applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength.

Heat Treatment:
  • Annealing at 790-900°C, air cool. Cannot be hardened by thermal treatment. Post-weld annealing improves weld ductility.
  • Welding: Preheat 150-260°C recommended. Austenitic filler rods improve weld ductility. Automotive exhaust tubing often welded autogenously.

SS 430

Features:
  • Ferritic, magnetic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance, especially to nitric acid and organic acids
  • Good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 870°C and continuous service up to 815°C
  • Good formability and ductility, non-hardenable by heat treatment

Applications:
Heat exchangers and pumps, consumer goods such as cookware and fasteners, and food processing equipment due to its good corrosion resistance, heat tolerance, and cost-effectiveness.

Heat Treatment:
Annealed by heating uniformly to 790–845°C (1450–1550°F), holding at this temperature to relieve internal stresses, then furnace or air cooled. It is not hardenable by heat treatment but can undergo stress relief annealing. Normalizing is performed at 845–955°C (1550–1750°F) with air cooling.
ss430 grade
Stainless steel 430 is a ferritic, non-hardenable chromium stainless steel known for its good corrosion resistance, excellent formability, and ductility. It typically contains 16-18% chromium, which provides good resistance to oxidizing environments, including nitric acid. This grade offers moderate strength and hardness, good thermal conductivity, and magnetic properties. Commonly used in kitchen appliances, automotive trim, architectural panels, and industrial equipment, 430 stainless steel is valued for its affordability, durability, and resistance to heat and corrosion in mild environments. It is also widely applied in chemical processing equipment due to its excellent resistance to nitric acid.
